Messages from Paul
This week we’ve reached the half way mark of our 12-week series in John’s Gospel, and we’re looking again at the challenge that is at the heart of all New Testament teaching, that we must die to ourselves such that the life of Jesus can be released through us. We know the principle well, but how blurred it can get when we often want our own way, when we harbour resentments, or when we retreat into self-pity. Never mind, the Lord specialises in wiping the slate clean, and we can discover again that the old has gone, the new has come, even today. This is one of the fortnightly occasions when we share in Holy Communion, so let’s remind ourselves of that as we take the bread and wine together. I love the bidding that is used in the old Anglican Book of Common Prayer:
Ye that do truly and earnestly repent you of your sins,
and are in love and charity with your neighbours,
and intend to lead a new life,
following the commandments of God,
and walking from henceforth in His holy ways;
Draw near with faith,
and take this holy sacrament to your comfort;
and make your humble confession to Almighty God,
meekly kneeling upon your knees.
As I said, it’s a new day!
This afternoon a small team are out on the doors, working in Church Road, Salmons Lane and Portley Wood Road. Pray for us!
Men’s Breakfast
This Saturday July 14 when we welcome Pastor Chris Roe from Folly’s End Evangelical Church, Croydon. Chris is a life-long Crystal Palace fan and has recently taken on the job of club chaplain so to find out how football and faith can go hand in hand don’t miss out on Saturday’s breakfast where they will be a chance to ask Chris questions about his role as Chaplain and to feast your delights on another full English breakfast. Please let Richard know if you are able to come so we have some idea of how many to cater for.
Working Party
From Richard: this is on Saturday July 21 from 9:00am until 1:00pm or for how ever long you can make it. Once again the church grounds are in need of some attention so there will be another Church Working party to tidy up and sort out a few other areas which could do with some looking after. If you are able to come please let Richard know so he has some idea of how many jobs we will be able to complete.
From Paul: Saturday week (July 21), we’re having another work party, so please consider if you can give some time to this. There was a good turn-out on the last occasion – thanks so much for the effort that was made. Let’s make another one now that the rainy season is over – in faith! (9:00am till 12:00pm approximately).
